How to choose a motorcycle helmet

No piece of equipment is more important than a good motorcycle helmet. Buying a new helmet may be more daunting than choosing a bike, and most important is choosing the right size of your helmet. A new helmet should be as snug as you can comfortably wear it. When choosing a motorcycle helmet, people often tend to choose larger size, because the helmet seem comfortable. But every helmet will loosen up a bit with time, and if you have improper fit, the helmet’s not going to do the correct job. You also don’t want the helmet rotating around while riding. Helmet too large will move around and up and down on your head when you least want it to; it can let in wind and worst of all, it may come off in a crash!

It’s really important to find the helmet that fits your head the best. Measure the circumference of your head, Wrap a tape measure around your head, about 1.5 cm above your eyebrows and just above your ears. According to the helmets sizing chart below find correct size of your helmet. If  your  head  measurement  falls  between  two  sizes,  first  try  on  the  smaller  helmet. If possible, try the helmet on before buying it. Wear the helmet around the store for a while to see if that there aren´t any uncomfortable pressure points that aren't immediately obvious. If you are using balaclava, take it with you into the shop.

The Best Way to Try on Your Helmet

  • In general, a brand new helmet should feel slightly tight on your head, almost to the point of being uncomfortable, but you can not push anywhere. You only want the skin to move, you don’t want the padding to move against the skin, this would mean the helmet is likely too big.
  • Once the helmet is on your head, check how much you can see in tucked-in position.  Check your peripheral vision, check whether you can look over your shoulder and that the helmet does not restrict movements of your head and neck. Bend your head backwards as far as possible. The helmet  shell must not touch your back.
  • Check that chinstrap, quick release buckle, visor, sun shield, air vents and other helmet  controls are easy to operate even with riding gloves on.  Shake your helmet from side to side. Try rolling the helmet forward off your head. Do this with your chin strap securely fastened. You shouldn't be able to pull it off. If you can, the helmet is too big.
  • On full-face helmets, press on the chin piece. The helmet or face shield should not touch your nose or chin. If it does,
it will surely do so at speed from wind pressure. Move it from side to side and up and down with your hands. If it fits right,
your skin should move as the helmet is moved. If the helmet is too  big for you, select a smaller size. If you, however,
feel pressure just in two particular pressure points and otherwise helmet fits you well, our dealers know how to modify
your helmet in these particular places to fit you perfectly.
